Xeomin Pre-treatment and
Post-treatment Guidelines

Pre-Treatment Instructions

  • 3 DAYS BEFORE treatment: AVOID topical products such as Tretinoin (Retin-A), Retinols, Retinoids, Glycolic Acid, Alpha Hydroxy Acid, or other “anti-aging” products. Also AVOID waxing, bleaching, tweezing, or the use of hair removal cream on the area to be treated.

  • 7 DAYS BEFORE treatment (to prevent bruising): AVOID blood thinning over-the-counter medications such as Aspirin, Motrin, Ibuprofen, and Aleve. Also avoid herbal supplements, such as Garlic, Vitamin E, Ginkgo Biloba, St. John’s Wort, and Omega-3 capsules. If you are taking prescribed medications such as Coumadin/warfarin, Pletal, or Aggrenox, consult with your primary care doctor before discontinuing use.

  • Do not drink alcoholic beverages for at least 24 hours before (or after) your treatment to avoid extra bruising.

  • Avoid vigorous exercise on the same day of treatment.

  • Inform Dr. Merola if you have a history of Perioral Herpes to receive advice on antiviral therapy prior to treatment.

  • Do not use XEOMIN® if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, are allergic to any of its ingredients, or suffer from any neurological disorders. Please inform Dr. Merola if you have any questions about this prior to the treatment.

Post-Treatment Instructions

  • AVOID straining, heavy lifting, or vigorous exercise for 3-4 hours following treatment.

  • AVOID laying down or bending over for 3-4 hours following treatment.

  • AVOID manipulation of the area for 3-4 hours following treatment. This includes not doing a facial, peel, or micro-dermabrasion AFTER treatment with Xeomin®.

  • It can take 2-14 days for Xeomin® to take full effect. It is recommended that the patient contact Dr. Merola no later than 2 weeks after the treatment if the desired effect was not achieved (and no sooner to give the toxin time to work).

  • Arnica gel can be applied to the areas treated afterwards to help with healing and reduce the risk of bruising. Arnica 30C pellets can also be taken (5 pellets under tongue).

  • Makeup may be applied before leaving the office. Avoid Retin-A, Glycolic acid, Vitamin C, or other "anti-aging products for the next 24 hours to the treated areas.

  • Although extremely rare, allergic reaction to botox serum can occur. If you experience EXTREME skin redness, swelling or rash, or SEVERELY swollen or puffy eyes, or SEVERE headache, you may be allergic to botox serum or you may have developed antibodies to the botox serum from previous treatment. Go directly to your closest emergency room or urgent care to confirm the reaction as allergic and receive treatment immediately.
