How to Have a Healthier Thanksgiving
Most of us look forward to Thanksgiving as a time to relax, spend time with friends and family, and of course, have some delicious meals!
Over the years, the traditions that started Thanksgiving have changed, and become more commercialized. A lot of the more traditional methods of cooking have been replaced by store-bought options.
This has also brought with it a lot more unhealthy habits that can overshadow the enjoyment of Thanksgiving dinner.
But the good news is, there are always ways to make Thanksgiving a healthier time, while still being enjoyable.
Kick-Off The Day Right
Even though the weather is cooler around this time of year, it can be a fun activity to get outdoors in the morning for a walk or run. Many cities offer an event known as a ‘turkey trot’ to encourage people to burn some calories before the indulge.
The combination of fresh air, exercise, sunlight, and some good company can be a great way to kick off the Thanksgiving festivities.
Stay Hydrated
While we focus on food on Thanksgiving, sometimes we neglect to drink any water. Beer, wine, cocktails, coffee all get a decent tasting, yet they can dehydrate us.
Before you begin tucking into your lunch, try drinking a glass or two of water. Not only will it slow your appetite, it will help with digestion, and make you feel better later.
Go Organic
Because of the commercialization of Thanksgiving, there are hundreds of options to choose from. Yet many vegetables, meats, and produce are full of harmful chemicals.
Wherever you can, try to find an organic option. You might pay a few dollars more, but the taste and quality of the food will likely be higher. Plus, the more we as consumers choose organic options, the more the suppliers will provide them in the long term. It’s a win-win for both health, and the organic farmers and suppliers.
Balance Your Plate
Yes, we all love those tasty, starchy foods like mash potatoes and pumpkin pie, but remember that having a balanced meal can make a big difference to your waistline.
Start by filling your plate with colorful vegetables, then proteins, then finally some tasty carbs. In this order, you are more likely to have more of the healthier choices and less guilty ones.
Thanksgiving is a time to celebrate and enjoy being together. It isn’t meant to be a time to feel bad about what you ate. Remember that moderation is always the best approach and that you can always get back to being perfect with your diet tomorrow. A little indulgence now and then can be a good thing, as long as you get back to healthy habits after the holiday.
Wishing you and your family a wonderful Thanksgiving!
